In Search of the White City
With my In Search of the White City series, I explored Jackson Park, the site of the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair Columbian Exhibition, to see if I could find any remnants of the historic event. Little is left in the form of architecture, except for a reproduction of one of the buildings, which we know today as the Museum of Science and Industry. However, my interest lies in the disregarded bits of more recent times: a beer bottle, a can of sardines, burnt wood, a lawn chair. I imagine Daniel Burnham and a modern-day vagrant in the White City simultaneously.
